North Shore Kadimah Unit No. 3501 was instituted on 13th September 2009, and was born out of the merger of North Shore Unit (instituted in November 1986) and Kadimah Unit (instituted in March 1987). These were the first BB units established on Sydney's North Shore.
From their inception the aims of both units were to be worthy members of BB in promoting the objectives of this world wide organisation to the Jewish and wider communities, principally in the fields of racism and antisemitism. To fulfill these objectives the units supported benevolent projects for the sick and needy in Israel and for local Jewish and general communities by raising funds with cultural, social or ‘hands on’ activities for the disabled, handicapped or the disadvantaged.
Social activities include theatre parties, Shabbat dinners, games nights and weekends away.
Ongoing “hands on” care is provided for DARTS (Disabled and Alternative Road Travel Service). This is a support organisation which arranges outings for disabled people in wheelchairs.
Members of the Unit read and record articles from the Australian Jewish News on a weekly basis. The recordings are distributed to members of the Jewish community who are affected by visual impairment.
The combination of fund raising, social outings, ‘hands on’ projects and regular monthly meetings, with interesting guest speakers welded a camaraderie and bondship of members in the respective units.
Members of both units have assumed prominent rolls in the administration of BB District of Australia and New Zealand by occupying positions on District at various times as President, Secretary and Treasurer, whilst in NSW Council as President, Vice President and Secretary, Treasurer and Councilors. Whilst holding these positions the units made significant contributions not only to the affairs of District but also to BB International.
The past years have been an enjoyable journey under the umbrella of this respected International organisation and the North Shore Kadimah Unit looks forward to the future in being an ongoing contributor to the aims and ideals of BB.
