President: Jacqui Dinor-Corry
Raoul Wallenberg Unit was instituted in 1985, and has grown to be a cohesive group of some 150 members.
The Unit awards study grants to secondary teachers to attend seminars at Yad Vashem in Israel (via Pauline Glass Study Grants), and sponsors and Courage to Care.
Celebrating over 30 years since establishment, Raoul Wallenberg’s 150 members can participate in regular meetings, Fellowship Concerts for the elderly, book discussions, heritage evenings, musical appreciation and a range of outdoor activities.
Raoul Wallenberg Unit also supports other community entities, including Emmy Monash Home for the Aged, Montefiore/Jewish Care, Council of Jewish Education, Fellowship Concerts, Israel Commission and various disaster funds.
The Unit was founded with the special purpose of disseminating the account of the noble and heroic work of Raoul Wallenberg, who saved many tens of thousands of the Jews of Hungary in 1944, and also of those non-Jewish women and men who acted as he did, in other parts of Europe whilst it was under Nazi rule.
We have instituted the Raoul Wallenberg Humanitarian Award, which has been presented to distinguished citizens in honour of their outstanding humanitarian work. The most recent award was to Sir Gustav Nossal, in April 2006.
To celebrate Raoul Wallenberg Unit’s 25th anniversary in 2010, a Raoul Wallenberg Stamp Sheet and Envelope Set was released in conjunction with Max Stern & Co, a leading Melbourne stamp dealership; and Australia Post. A Schutzpass, which belonged to the late Susan Reichman, a Sister of our Unit, is reproduced on the back of the protective envelope.
In 2012, the Unit added a special Centenary Postmark (marking the 100th birthday of Raoul Wallenberg on 4 August 1912) to a small, limited edition of 250 of the original edition of Raoul Wallenberg Stamp Sheets. A few of these are still available at $A25 each plus $A5 handling and postage in Australia; $A12 handling and postage overseas.
In 2013, the Unit added another postmark to the Stamp Sheet to commemorate the conferring of Honorary Citizenship to Raoul Wallenberg.
The set may be purchased from Raoul Wallenberg Unit by phoning: +61 (0)3 9816 9414 or emailing: [email protected].
